Democratic Republic of the Congo authorities are unable to identify the bodies of people killed during a prison break this week that left at least 129 people dead, the justice ministry said Friday, September 6. The circumstances around the attempt to bust out of the Makala prison in Kinshasa, which holds 10 times the number it is meant to house, remain unclear.
Witnesses heard gunfire in the area of the prison, and the Interior Minister announced a death toll of 129 people, including victims who were shot after warnings. Investigations are ongoing to punish those responsible for the sabotage.
