Storm Yagi has transformed into a powerful super typhoon on its path to China, potentially the strongest storm to hit the country in nearly ten years. After wreaking havoc in the Philippines, schools closed and flights were canceled as the typhoon brought heavy rains and high winds to the Chinese coast. Located 400km southeast of Zhanjiang City in Guangdong province, the super typhoon is moving westward at 10-15kmph.
Forecasted to have the most impact on Guangdong and Hainan, Yagi is expected to make landfall between Qionghai and Dianbai on Friday. With wind gusts exceeding 160mph, the typhoon has already claimed 14 lives in the Philippines before heading towards China. Southern China is now on high alert, with Hainan’s Haikou airport closing, trains and boats suspended, and schools shut across the region.
Cities like Hong Kong, Macau, and Guangzhou are bracing for potential flooding and disruptions, with Hong Kong preparing to issue a No 8 typhoon signal. The storm, classified as a Category 5 equivalent typhoon, is predicted to bring heavy rainfall and gusty winds as it moves westward towards northern Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand.
