US, UK, and EU to sign AI treaty

A new era has dawned in the technological landscape as the first legally binding international AI treaty will be open for signing by various countries on Thursday. The AI Convention, the result of years of negotiations between 57 countries, aims to address the risks posed by AI while promoting responsible innovation. This groundbreaking treaty focuses on protecting the human rights of individuals impacted by AI systems, separate from the EU AI Act, which recently came into effect.

The Council of Europe, an international organization separate from the EU, spearheaded the treaty, which includes provisions for signatories to adopt measures to uphold the treaty’s principles. However, concerns have been raised about the treaty’s enforceability and loopholes, particularly regarding national security exemptions and unequal scrutiny of private companies versus the public sector.

Despite these challenges, the UK government has committed to collaborating with regulatory bodies to ensure compliance with the treaty’s requirements.
