The United States has charged five Russian military officers for cyberattacks on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine before the Russian invasion. The cyber campaign, known as “WhisperGate,” targeted various sectors in Ukraine, including financial systems, agriculture, and healthcare, intending to cripple the country.
The defendants include a Russian civilian and members of the GRU military intelligence agency, who remain at large. The indictment also accuses them of conducting similar attacks in the US and other NATO countries supporting Ukraine.
The indictment revealed that WhisperGate involved a cyberweapon designed to destroy target computers and related data, leading to the exposure of sensitive information. This incident occurred as part of a broader pattern of Russian cyber interference.
