US Justice Department Reveals Russian Efforts to Influence 2024 Presidential Election
The US Justice Department recently announced measures to combat Russian interference in the upcoming presidential election, unveiling an indictment against two RT employees. According to the charges, Kostiantyn Kalashnikov and Elena Afanasyeva allegedly funneled $10m to a Tennessee media outlet through illicit means to sow political discord in the US.
Attorney General Merrick B Garland condemned the covert operation, highlighting the dissemination of “hidden Russian government messaging” to American audiences. The accused employees face charges related to money laundering and violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act.
While the Tennessee-based media company remains unnamed, speculation points to Tenet Media, a network associated with right-wing commentators. Influencers like Dave Rubin, Tim Pool, and Benny Johnson have denied knowledge of the scheme, claiming victimization.
Furthermore, US officials seized 32 domains used in Russian-led disinformation campaigns, targeting the electoral process and undermining support for Ukraine. FBI Director Christopher Wray emphasized the need to counter foreign interference, accusing Russia, China, and Iran of election meddling.
