Political Witch Hunt: US Activists Go to Trial in Florida, Accused of Acting as Russian Agents
Sputnik International
Four activists from the African People’s Socialist Party and the Uhuru Movement in St. Petersburg and St. Louis are facing trial in Florida for allegedly acting as Russian agents to create political discord in the US. Led by 82-year-old activist Omali Yeshitela, the group focuses on Black empowerment and reparations for slavery. Despite sharing goals with Russian movements, they deny being controlled by the Kremlin.
The activists’ home raids by the FBI in 2022, allegedly linked to a Russian man influencing US politics, resulted in indictments nine months later. Charges claim Aleksandr Ionov paid them to make pro-Russian statements and fund political campaigns. The case has sparked criticism from figures like Jill Stein for violating free speech rights.
This trial is part of a broader crackdown on US citizens connected to Russian media, with critics calling it an attack on dissent and an attempt to restore Cold War tensions.
