Sudan Conflict Leads to 50,000 Refugees in Ethiopia Facing Hardship

Sudan’s conflict between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) has resulted in accusations of war crimes, including attacks on civilians. Over 50,000 Sudanese refugees have sought shelter in Ethiopia, which is already hosting 1 million refugees from other crises in the region. However, Ethiopia is facing challenges of its own, including food insecurity and internal displacement of 3.5 million Ethiopians due to conflicts in various regions.

The ongoing insecurity hinders aid distribution, with rebel groups targeting humanitarian workers. The stories of refugees like Treza Deng Chol and Amza Hussein depict the grief and hardships faced by those fleeing the conflict.

Funding Gaps Impact Refugee Support

Ethiopia’s humanitarian efforts are severely underfunded, with UNHCR only able to provide half of the needed support. The large funding gap results in refugees receiving less than 60% of the recommended daily rations. Despite economic struggles, Ethiopian authorities continue to support refugees, even though resources are limited.
