Margaret Best’s son, Kenneth, was one of many abused in special schools by religious orders, as outlined in the Government’s Scoping Inquiry. The report revealed a high prevalence of child sexual abuse in schools for children with disabilities.
Kenneth attended Lota boarding school in 1975 and suffered abuse, leading his mother to discover signs of trauma. Despite complaints to the Brothers of Charity, nothing was done. Margaret regrets trusting professionals and believes Kenneth was failed educationally and emotionally.
Years of seeking justice through state inquiries yielded little acknowledgement. The recent Scoping Inquiry shed light on the issue, emphasizing the need for action. The Catholic Education Partnership acknowledged the betrayal of trust and pledged to work with stakeholders and the State to fulfill their responsibilities.
While Kenneth’s case remains unacknowledged, Margaret hopes the findings prompt meaningful change. The broadcast on Prime Time highlighted the ongoing struggle for justice in cases like Kenneth’s.
