Munich police shoot armed man near Israeli consulate

Published by

A suspected gunman was shot dead by German police near the Israeli consulate and a Nazi history museum in Munich, on the anniversary of the 1972 attack at the Olympic Games.

On Thursday morning, a lone man with a long-barrelled gun was confronted by Munich police in the Karolinenplatz area. The suspect, who has not yet been identified, opened fire on police officers and was shot dead in return. Fortunately, none of the officers were injured in the incident, and there are no further suspects at large.

The Israeli consulate was closed for a memorial of the Munich Olympics massacre, and none of the consulate staff were harmed. German officials have emphasized the importance of protecting Jewish and Israeli facilities in the area.

The incident occurred near the Munich Documentation Centre for the History of National Socialism, adding significance to the location. Police had urged the public to avoid the area during the operation, which also involved a helicopter for surveillance.
