Germany Considers Deporting Migrants to Rwanda Amid Policy Debate
In the midst of Germany’s deportation policy debate, Federal Migration Commissioner Joachim Stamp suggested the possibility of deporting migrants to Rwanda if returning them to their homelands proved difficult. Speaking on the podcast Table.Briefings, Stamp mentioned that migrants arriving in Germany via Russia and Belarus could potentially be sent to the east African nation.
Stamp explained that the influx of migrants from these countries was part of a “hybrid warfare” strategy by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarusian President Aleksander Lukashenko against the West. He speculated that this tactic aimed to encourage Syrian, Iraqi, and Afghan refugees to reach Europe through Minsk and Moscow.
While detailing the potential use of deportation structures originally prepared for the UK, Stamp emphasized the need for changes in Germany’s deportation laws to facilitate such actions. Deportation has gained importance in light of recent events, including a deadly attack in Solingen by a rejected Syrian asylum-seeker. Chancellor Olaf Scholz has committed to introducing new legislation to expedite deportations by December.
