The Meta Platforms’ Oversight Board advises against automatically removing the sentence ‘From the river to the sea’ on Facebook.
The Board clarified that the phrase has multiple meanings and is often used in pro-Palestinian demonstrations without harmful intent. It recommended allowing room for debate and context, especially during times of conflict.
The decision came after reviewing three cases on Facebook where the phrase was used without violating community standards. The Board also criticized Meta’s data denial and urged greater transparency.
Allegations of censorship were further highlighted in an Al-Jazeera investigation revealing Facebook’s ties with the Israeli government, leading to concerns about biased content removal requests.
The complex relationship between social media companies, political interests, and freedom of expression continues to raise questions about censorship and accountability.
