Gaza Cease-Fire Negotiations: Hamas Sticks to US-Backed Proposal
In the midst of the conflict in Gaza, Hamas has reaffirmed its commitment to a proposal supported by US President Joe Biden and a UN Security Council resolution for a cease-fire. Khalil al-Hayya, a member of Hamas’s political bureau, emphasized the need for a comprehensive halt to aggression against the Palestinian people, withdrawal of Israeli forces, the right of displaced individuals to return, relief efforts, and reconstruction of the region. He called on the US administration to apply real pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to honor previously agreed-upon terms.
Efforts to reach a cease-fire and achieve a hostage swap deal are ongoing, with Hamas engaging in dialogue with various mediators. Discussions have centered on a three-phase plan presented by Israel last May, focusing on a cease-fire, prisoner exchange, and reconstruction efforts. However, challenges persist, particularly concerning Israel’s military presence along the Philadelphi Corridor.
Despite international calls for an immediate end to hostilities, the conflict has resulted in a devastating toll on the Palestinian population, highlighting the urgent need for humanitarian aid and a lasting resolution to the crisis.
