DA fight to keep impeached judge out of JSC: Zille

The DA’s federal chairperson, Helen Zille, emphasized the party’s commitment to the values of constitutional democracy as they challenged Parliament’s decision to send impeached judge John Hlophe to the JSC. This move was seen as a stand against the appointment of individuals with a tainted record to critical roles within the judiciary.

In a court hearing, the DA and two other organizations sought to prevent Hlophe’s designation to the JSC, citing his previous misconduct. Hlophe had been impeached after the National Assembly voted for his removal, making him the first judge to face such a consequence in democratic South Africa.

Outside the court, DA supporters displayed placards advocating for the appointment of judges with integrity. Zille highlighted the importance of upholding unimpeachable standards in the judiciary and the need to restore public trust in political processes.

This legal battle represents a larger fight for the integrity of the judicial system and the values of constitutional democracy, ensuring that those in power within the judiciary maintain the highest ethical standards.

This is a developing story.
