Bank of Ireland Launches Plan to Combat Rising Fraud

As fraud continues to rise in Ireland, Bank of Ireland has introduced a new plan aimed at protecting consumers from scams. One key aspect of this plan is the implementation of an SMS scam filter to help detect and block harmful messages.

Scammers often impersonate well-known businesses or organizations in their fraudulent messages, such as fake texts from delivery companies or banks. These messages typically contain links to fake websites or malware, allowing scammers to steal personal information and carry out unauthorized transactions.

The introduction of an SMS scam filter would bring Ireland in line with other English-speaking countries and help protect consumers from falling victim to these scams. Bank of Ireland is urging the Department of Environment, Climate, and Communications to prioritize legislation for the implementation of this filter.

In addition to the SMS filter, the plan includes measures such as restricting online advertising for financial products to regulated providers and developing a shared fraud database. With fraud costing Ireland €100m in 2023 alone, it is crucial for consumers to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to local authorities.
