ANZ denies reneging on promise by closing Katoomba branch

ANZ faces backlash for closing its Katoomba branch in the NSW Blue Mountains, despite a promise not to close regional branches until mid-2027. The closure, slated for October 23, has sparked community protests and a petition with over 13,000 signatures.

The bank maintains that Katoomba is classified as a major city by ABS standards, so the closure does not violate the agreement. ANZ CEO Shayne Elliott faced scrutiny over the closure during a parliamentary inquiry but seemed unaware of the decision, later stating they are reviewing it.

Despite community outcry, ANZ defends the closure, citing decreasing branch transactions. The bank has also faced criticism over plans to shut other branches, such as Murwillumbah, due to mold issues. ANZ is working with affected customers to explore alternative banking options.
