US tightens grip on Russian meddling in 2024 vote

The United States Justice Department (DOJ) recently made a significant move by seizing 32 internet domains tied to Kremlin propaganda campaigns aimed at influencing the 2024 presidential election. This action follows U.S. intelligence warnings of Russian plans to interfere in the upcoming election through various information campaigns targeting American voters.

In addition to the domain seizures, the U.S. Treasury Department designated 10 individuals and two entities linked to Russia’s coordinated propaganda scheme, known as “Doppelganger.” The DOJ also indicted two Russian nationals working for the Russian state news agency RT.

Through entities like Social Design Agency and Structura, directed by Sergey Kiriyenko, a close associate of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Russia allegedly spread propaganda to sway international elections and diminish support for Ukraine. The DOJ revealed that Russia aims to secure its preferred outcomes in elections through deceptive tactics like cybersquatting and AI-generated disinformation disseminated via fake influencers and accounts on social media.

This decisive action by the DOJ signifies a strong stance against foreign interference in U.S. elections, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding democracy from malign actors like the Russian government.
