In a plea for justice and human rights, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, called for the immediate release of six UN personnel detained for three months in Yemen by the Houthi de facto authorities. A total of 17 UN staff members have been arbitrarily detained, with some held incommunicado since 2021 and 2023. The whereabouts of these individuals remain unknown, and the Houthi authorities have not allowed any physical access to them despite repeated requests.
The Chief Spokesperson for the High Commissioner emphasized the need for due process, legal representation, and evidence in cases where staff are accused of breaking laws. The accusations were described as “spurious” and fabricated.
The plea was also extended to the Houthi authorities to facilitate the work of UN entities and other human rights and humanitarian actors in Yemen. This call for cooperation aims to ensure the promotion and protection of human rights for the people of Yemen.
