Uber Japan Launches Trial of Car-Sharing Services in Tokyo
Uber Japan has announced the launch of a trial for car-sharing services as part of its ride-hailing offerings in Tokyo. Partnering with Royal Limousine and Times Mobility, Uber aims to onboard more ride-hailing drivers by enabling ordinary drivers to provide services even without owning vehicles.
During the trial period until November 30, drivers recruited by Royal Limousine will utilize vehicles from Times Mobility to offer ride-hailing services in central Tokyo and western Tokyo cities. The success of this trial will determine the potential full-scale launch of such services by Uber.
Following the partial lift of a ban on ride-hailing services in April, the government allowed individuals to use their private vehicles for paid rides. However, limited time and area constraints hindered the widespread adoption of such services. The collaboration between Uber, Royal Limousine, and Times Mobility aims to address these challenges and promote the expansion of ride-hailing services in Japan.
At a media demonstration event, Kazuo Horie, adviser at Royal Limousine, expressed optimism about the future of ride-hailing services by enabling individuals to work as drivers without the need to own cars.
