The United States has seized Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s airplane in the Dominican Republic, citing sanctions laws, the Justice Department announced Monday. Attorney General Merrick B. Garland stated that the aircraft, a Dassault Falcon 900EX, was allegedly illegally purchased and smuggled out of the U.S. for use by Maduro and his associates.
This seizure is the latest development in the ongoing strained relations between the U.S. and Venezuela, with the U.S. imposing economic sanctions and diplomatic isolation in support of opposition leaders. The Justice Department had previously indicted Maduro on narco-terrorism charges.
In response, Venezuela ordered the arrest of presidential candidate Edmundo Gonzalez, accused of various crimes. These actions reflect the escalating tensions and complex dynamics between the two nations.
