The United States has indicted two employees of Russia’s RT and imposed sanctions on top editors of the state-funded news outlet, accusing them of trying to influence the 2024 U.S. presidential election. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen emphasized the government’s commitment to holding state-sponsored actors accountable for activities that undermine public trust and election integrity.
Attorney General Merrick Garland revealed that two Russia-based RT employees have been indicted for money laundering and violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act. The Justice Department has also seized internet domains used by the Russian government to interfere in U.S. elections.
RT dismissed the allegations as “hackneyed cliches,” while U.S. officials have accused Russia of meddling in elections since 2016. The Treasury Department described RT editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan as a key figure in Russian government malign influence efforts.
Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines highlighted Russia, China, and Iran as significant threats to U.S. elections but assured the government’s readiness to protect American democracy from foreign influence.
