United Nations Security Council Urges Ceasefire in Gaza Strip
Patience is wearing thin among United Nations Security Council members as they consider taking action if a ceasefire cannot be brokered soon between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, according to Slovenia’s U.N. Ambassador Samuel Zbogar. As the council president for September, Zbogar emphasized the need for urgent action to bring an end to the ongoing conflict.
Despite efforts led by the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar, a deal has yet to be reached between Israel and Hamas. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres questioned how the parties in Gaza could agree to pause fighting for a polio vaccination campaign but not for a ceasefire to protect innocent lives.
In response to the stalled implementation of resolution 2735, Zbogar stated that the council may need to move on to find alternative solutions. The Security Council is prepared to consider various actions to address the situation in Gaza and push for a meaningful resolution.
The international community, including Security Council members, is urging for immediate action to bring an end to the conflict and protect civilians in the region.
