A Russian GRU spy named Paweł Rubcow, disguised as a Spanish journalist, was granted access to classified documents and materials related to his own investigation before being extradited from Poland to Russia. This controversial decision by the prosecution has raised concerns about security procedures and potential compromises in state interests, as reported by “Rzeczpospolita.”
Despite the option to restrict access to sensitive information under the law, the prosecution allowed Rubcow to review all evidence, including secret documents. This leniency has been criticized by experts, such as Prosecutor Kazimierz Olejnik, who believe that only essential materials should have been shared with the accused spy.
Spying Allegations
Rubcow, also known as Gonzalez, was apprehended in Przemyśl in February 2022 on charges of espionage for Russia. Operating under the guise of a journalist, he allegedly gathered intelligence for the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Russian military, the GRU. Rubcow’s connections to Russian opposition figures and high-ranking GRU members have further implicated him in espionage activities.
