The Myanmar military designates three major ethnic armed groups as “terrorist” organizations
The Myanmar military has officially labeled the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA), Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), and Arakan Army as “terrorist” groups, banning anyone from joining or having contact with them. This designation, made on September 2, falls under the Anti-Terror Law.
The Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, who chairs the military’s State Administration Council (SAC), emphasized that even contacting these groups constitutes committing terror acts. This move comes after the Three Brotherhood Alliance, formed by these armed groups, initiated a major offensive last year.
These ethnic armed groups have made significant advances in parts of northern and western Myanmar, with the Arakan Army reportedly controlling territory in Rakhine with a population of about one million people. In response, the People’s Defence Forces (PDFs) have also escalated their resistance against the military.
As the political turmoil continues, the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners reports a staggering death toll and imprisonment of thousands since the military coup in February 2021.
