A staff member of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Pyramid FM, Kano, Muktar Dahiru, was granted N1 million bail by a Kano Magistrates’ Court. He faces charges of criminal conspiracy, defamation of character, and intentional insult. Dahiru was remanded in a correctional facility but was admitted to bail on the condition of producing three reliable sureties, including the Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists and his wife.
The court also imposed a condition that an elderly man not less than 65 years of age must ensure Dahiru does not publish anything detrimental to the complainant. The trial is set for October 2, 2024, and the alleged offences contravene sections of the Kano State Penal Code Law.
Reports suggest Dahiru was prosecuted for sharing critical content on state government officials through his personal social media handle. The complainant, Anas Dala, accused Dahiru of defamation for labeling him an adulterer and disrespecting the Vice President. Dala clarified that the aim was to protect his integrity and image, denying claims of government involvement in the case.
