The Deputy Governor of Jonglei State, Atong Kuol Manyang, led a community security workshop in Bor to tackle rising security challenges. Supported by the UNDP’s “Community Violence Reduction Project Phase II,” the workshop gathered key stakeholders to develop practical solutions for enhancing security in the state. Atong emphasized the need to address the proliferation of small arms, which has led to increased crime and violence in the region.
UNDP’s Security Specialist, Peruth Karungi, outlined plans to transition to proactive policing and improve police-community relations through initiatives like Police Community Relations Committees (PCRC) and youth patrol teams. The State Police Commissioner, Maj. Gen. John Baak, highlighted serious crimes like gender-based violence and child abductions, exacerbated by flooding and resource limitations.
The workshop stressed the importance of establishing more PCRCs, supporting youth patrols, and conducting community dialogues. Currently, 32 PCRCs operate in Bor, resolving disputes through Alternative Dispute Resolution methods. The collaborative efforts of the state government, UNDP, and stakeholders aim to make Jonglei safe again.
