Unprecedented Heatwave and Torrential Rain Linked to Climate Change in Japan
Recent analysis by the Meteorological Agency and education ministry in Japan has linked the extreme heatwave and heavy rainfall in July to the impacts of global warming. The researchers used the event attribution method to determine that the record temperatures and severe floods were greatly exacerbated by climate change.
Temperatures soared to unprecedented levels in June through August, with some areas reaching 41.0 degrees Celsius. The rise in temperatures, coupled with increased water vapor, led to a 20% rise in rainfall in Akita and Yamagata prefectures. This extreme weather event was deemed to be a once-in-a-decade occurrence under current climate conditions.
The heavy rainfall in northern Japan, particularly in Yamagata, resulted in devastating floods and casualties. Three people lost their lives and nearly 1,800 homes were destroyed or inundated with water, highlighting the urgent need to address the impacts of climate change.
