A sigh of relief for Defense Ministry officials as the Japanese company announces the continuation of production for the unique U.S.-2 amphibious plane, a vital asset for search-and-rescue missions by the Maritime Self-Defense Force.
The U.S.-2 amphibious plane stands out as the only aircraft in the world capable of safely landing on rough waves as high as 3 meters. Recent concerns over the discontinuation of production due to escalating costs had caused unease, but now the company’s commitment to ongoing production provides assurance.
In response to the news, the Ministry has included a budget request of ¥21.9 billion ($150 million) for the acquisition of a new U.S.-2 aircraft in the fiscal 2025 budget. This move reflects the recognition of the aircraft’s critical role in ensuring maritime security and responding to emergencies effectively.
