International community concerned about arrest warrant against González Urrutia
Multiple voices from the international community expressed concerns after Venezuela’s Judiciary issued an arrest warrant against opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia, who many believe to be the true winner of the recent presidential elections. The incumbent, Nicolás Maduro, claims victory without evidence.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres stated his concern over the situation in Venezuela, urging the authorities to respect González’s freedom and rights. The EU High Representative, Josep Borrell, and several Latin American countries also condemned the arrest warrant, calling it a form of political persecution.
The OAS General Secretariat criticized the Venezuelan judiciary for issuing the warrant and stated that expecting justice from Venezuelan authorities is a “legal absurdity.” The international community continues to denounce the actions against González Urrutia and calls for respect for human rights and the will of the Venezuelan people.
