Ex-mayor accused of being Chinese spy arrested after cross-border chase

A former mayor from the Philippines, accused of spying for China and money laundering, was recently arrested in Indonesia after a police chase across four countries. Alice Guo had been evading authorities since disappearing in July during an investigation in her hometown of Bamban.

Philippine authorities confirmed Guo’s arrest by Indonesian police, with the Justice Department stating she is currently in custody. Denying the accusations, Guo is also accused of being a Chinese spy under the alias Guo Hua Ping.

Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. warned others evading justice, emphasizing that the law will eventually catch up to them. Last month, money laundering charges were filed against Guo and 35 others, alleging the laundering of over 100 million pesos in illicit proceeds.

Indonesia’s law minister mentioned Guo’s impending deportation, although the exact timing is still uncertain. Guo fled the Philippines through Malaysia and Singapore before reaching Indonesia, using her Philippine passport.

Her arrest followed a Senate investigation into scams operating in Bamban town, indicating a facility tied to the former mayor. Guo’s case showcases the importance of accountability and justice in combatting illegal activities.
