US authorities have charged former New York governors’ aide Linda Sun and her husband Chris Hu with acting as secret agents for the Chinese government. Sun, a former deputy chief of staff to Governor Kathy Hochul and ex-Governor Andrew Cuomo, faces multiple counts including violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act and money laundering conspiracy.
Charges
Hu is also charged with money laundering conspiracy and bank fraud. The couple, naturalised US citizens, have pleaded not guilty after federal investigators raided their home. Sun allegedly engaged in political activities to further Chinese interests by securing unauthorized invitations for Chinese officials to meet with NY state officials.
Benefits
The couple reportedly benefitted from millions in business deals, purchasing luxury properties and cars with the proceeds. Chinese embassy officials dismissed the allegations, stating similar cases have been unfounded. Governor Hochul expressed shock at the betrayal of trust and emphasized the need for national security free from foreign influence.
Reactions
Amid escalating accusations of espionage and influence peddling between the US and China, tensions have heightened. Both countries have increased arrests of individuals suspected of foreign influence. The CIA is reportedly intensifying efforts to counter China’s global influence, sparking a response from China about perceived US aggression.
