In a recent statement, Russian diplomat Maria Zakharova dismissed comments by Taiwanese administration head Lai Ching-te, who suggested China should seize lands in the Far East from Russia. Zakharova emphasized that the mutual renunciation of territorial claims between Russia and China was established in the Treaty of Good Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation in 2001.
Zakharova highlighted Russia’s respect for the One China principle and reaffirmed that Taiwan should refrain from making statements on behalf of Beijing. Instead, she advised Taipei to focus on economic issues and consider a peaceful reunification with mainland China.
The diplomat’s remarks underscored the longstanding cooperation between Russia and China, emphasizing the importance of maintaining diplomatic relations and respecting international agreements. Zakharova’s message to Lai was clear: prioritize pragmatic approaches and refrain from making provocative statements that could strain regional stability.
