Committee to Review Foreign Funds of NGOs in Pakistan

Committee to Review Foreign Funds of NGOs in Pakistan

The federal cabinet has formed a committee to review foreign funding received by NGOs, both international and domestic. The committee includes members such as Law and Justice Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar and Foreign Secretary Syrus Sajjad Qazi. They will review the channels through which NGOs receive foreign funding and ensure transparency and appropriate use of funds.

In 2015, a policy framework was put in place to regulate the work of INGOs in Pakistan. Organizations were required to register with the Ministry of Interior by signing MoUs, and those who did not comply were stopped from operating in the country. The government also barred fundraising without permission.

The move to review foreign funding comes after the government recently decided to reconsider allowing over a dozen international NGOs to work in Pakistan. The meeting to discuss this issue was chaired by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, and the applications of various INGOs were reviewed.

Overall, the government is taking steps to ensure that foreign funding received by NGOs is used appropriately and that organizations operate in accordance with the regulations set forth in the policy framework.
