Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau’s Government in Jeopardy as NDP Withdraws Support
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau faced an unexpected setback as the New Democratic Party (NDP) withdrew its support from his minority Liberal government. While this move doesn’t immediately threaten Trudeau’s position, he will now need to seek alliances with other opposition legislators to pass budgets and survive confidence votes.
NDP leader Jagmeet Singh criticized Trudeau for his alleged inability to stand up to the opposition Conservatives, who are predicted to win the next election. Singh terminated a 2022 agreement with Trudeau that guaranteed support until mid-2025 in exchange for increased social spending, citing the Liberals’ weakness and their failure to prioritize people over corporate interests.
Trudeau’s tenure since 2015 has led to voter fatigue, affecting both the Liberals and the NDP in recent polls. Despite pushing for progressive measures like a national dental program, the NDP remains in third place.
As the political landscape shifts, Trudeau’s ability to navigate these challenges will determine the future of his government.
