The Bauchi State Government and UNICEF have collaborated to distribute Multiple Micronutrient Supplements (MMS) across the state’s 20 local councils to combat anaemia in pregnant women. With only 23% of pregnant women in the state receiving essential iron and folic acid supplements, the initiative aims to address this issue following alarming findings from the 2018 NDHIS report.
UNICEF Nutrition Specialist Philomena Irene highlighted the significance of increasing MMS distribution to pregnant women. The project, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, aims to equip healthcare workers with the tools needed to track and administer MMS effectively using digital platforms.
This initiative aligns with the Nigerian government’s goal of reducing anaemia among pregnant women by 40% by 2025 and contributes to the broader SDG 2030 target of halving anaemia in pregnant women by 2030. UNICEF has pledged ongoing support to ensure MMS reaches all pregnant women in Bauchi State, with key stakeholders emphasizing the importance of maternal nutrition interventions.
