The main opposition party, the Democratic Party of Korea, has set up a ‘Former Administration Political Oppression Countermeasure Committee’ in response to the prosecution’s investigation targeting former President Moon Jae-in as a ‘suspect.’ Party leader Lee Jae-myung personally ordered the establishment of the committee, with three-term lawmaker Kim Young-jin, a close ally of Lee, appointed as committee chairman. The committee will include members from the pro-Moon faction of the party to address what they view as a politically motivated investigation. In a recent closed-door meeting, party spokesperson Han Min-soo announced the formation of the committee and plans to hold its first meeting next week.
Meanwhile, during his speech at the regular National Assembly party leaders’ address, Democratic Party floor leader Park Chan-dae criticized the prosecution’s investigation as biased and retaliatory. He pointed out the stark contrast in how the prosecution has handled investigations involving opposition party members compared to those linked to the ruling party. The investigation into Moon Jae-in has brought together allies from different factions within the party, with Lee Jae-myung actively condemning the prosecution’s actions. The strong response from the party signals a unified front against what they perceive as unjust political retaliation.
