Judge Edward Briceño swiftly granted the arrest warrant, emphasizing that no one is above the law in the country. González, accused of “serious crimes” including document falsification and system sabotage, has been in hiding and denied any wrongdoing. The European Union and several Latin American countries have not recognized Maduro’s re-election without transparency in voting results.
With the US recognizing González as the true winner and the arrest warrant heightening tensions, Venezuela is experiencing a climate of fear with over 2,400 detentions since the election. The possibility of González’s arrest on charges of inciting public disorder and conspiracy grows as the political situation remains volatile. This comes after the US Department of Justice seized a plane used by Maduro, leading to accusations of piracy by the Venezuelan government.
