US Marines in Turkey targeted by Anti-American assailants

Authorities in Turkey have detained 15 suspects following an attack on two US marines by a mob in Izmir. The suspects, members of the Turkey Youth Union, a group known for its anti-American sentiment, posted a video of the assault online. The incident occurred after the marines had participated in a joint training exercise with the Turkish Naval Forces. Fortunately, five additional US soldiers intervened before the police arrived, and the two marines are safe. The US embassy in Turkey confirmed the attack and commended the Turkish police for taking swift action.

A symbolic act

Placing a sack over the head of a US soldier has been a symbolic form of protest in Turkey to express anti-American feelings. The Turkey Youth Union has a history of similar assaults on US military personnel in the past. This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing tensions between Turkey and the US.
