Ukrenergo chief fired over energy security fears, media reports

Head of Ukraine’s State Grid Operator Dismissed Amid Russian Attacks

The head of Ukraine’s state grid operator Ukrenergo, Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, was dismissed from his role on Sept. 2 for failing to safeguard energy facilities during intensified Russian attacks. Ukrenergo’s Supervisory Board voted to dismiss Kudrytskyi and appointed Oleksiy Brekht as the interim head.

Speculation over Kudrytskyi’s future arose due to energy security concerns and a corruption probe. President Volodymyr Zelensky discussed these issues with officials, emphasizing the recent Russian attacks and defense infrastructure construction.

Kudrytskyi faces a pre-trial investigation for alleged corruption. Western organizations expressed concerns over his dismissal, emphasizing its impact on Ukraine’s energy security.

Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s energy grid aim to weaken the country. Following a lull, Russia launched fresh attacks, impacting energy consumption. The largest aerial strike on Aug. 26 targeted energy infrastructure.
