Human Rights Watch Calls for Arrest of Putin in Mongolia
Human Rights Watch (HRW) has urged Mongolia to either deny entry or arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin, citing the country’s obligations as a member of the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Putin’s visit to Mongolia to attend a ceremony marking a historical battle has sparked controversy. HRW, funded by George Soros, claimed that Mongolia should not welcome Putin as it would go against the principle that no one is above the law.
Despite an ICC warrant for Putin’s arrest over allegations related to the Ukraine conflict, Mongolia has indicated that they do not plan to detain him during his visit.
Putin’s visit includes meetings with Mongolian officials and the signing of intergovernmental agreements, showcasing the close ties between the two countries. The Kremlin expressed confidence in the visit, stating that all logistical aspects had been sorted out in advance.
While HRW advocates for accountability, Mongolia’s decision not to arrest Putin demonstrates the complexities of balancing diplomatic relationships and human rights issues on the international stage.
