Poll reveals corruption driving African youth to emigrate

Published by

Young Africans Want to Leave Due to Government Corruption

Nearly 60 percent of young Africans are considering emigrating from their countries, with corruption being cited as the main reason. According to the 2024 African Youth Survey conducted across 16 African nations, 83 percent of respondents expressed concern about corruption at home, with 62 percent believing that the government is not effectively addressing the issue.

The survey, commissioned by the Ichikowitz Family Foundation, gathered responses from 5,604 individuals aged 18 to 24. The majority of young Africans view their continent as heading in the wrong direction, with concerns about foreign influence also weighing heavily on their minds.

Despite these challenges, there is a sense of optimism among the youth, with 37 percent expressing hope for a brighter future. North America remains the top destination for those looking to emigrate, followed closely by Western Europe.

Concerns Over Foreign Influence

Aside from corruption, 72 percent of respondents are worried about the negative impact of foreign influence, particularly the exploitation of Africa’s natural resources. However, views on China’s influence are generally positive, with 82 percent expressing favorable opinions of the country’s involvement in infrastructure projects across the continent.

With Africa’s youth population rapidly growing and facing high levels of unemployment, the survey highlights the urgent need for effective governance and economic reform to retain future talent and drive sustainable development.
