The UK’s decision to suspend 30 of its 350 arms export licenses to Israel will not significantly impact Israel’s security, according to British Defense Secretary John Healey. He emphasized that the decision was made in accordance with the law but does not change the UK’s unwavering support for Israel’s right to self-defense.
Healey also disclosed that he informed his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant about the suspension before it was announced, stating, “we have a duty to follow the law, but this does not alter our unshakable commitment to support Israel’s right to self-defense.”
While Gallant expressed disappointment at the UK’s decision, Healey clarified that components for F-35 jets were intentionally excluded from the suspension due to their global supply chain and importance in UK and NATO security.
The UK government’s decision to suspend these licenses came after a review identified a risk that certain arms exports could be used to violate International Humanitarian Law. The licenses include components for various military equipment but exclude F-35 fighter jet parts.
