Netflix announced on Tuesday that it will include new disclaimers in an Indian series called IC-814: The Kandahar Hijack after facing backlash on social media and criticism from the government for depicting Muslim hijackers as Hindus.
The series is a fictionalized account of the 1999 hijacking of an Indian Airlines flight, and it stirred controversy for allegedly misrepresenting the hijackers’ religion and ethnicity.
Netflix executives were called in by India’s information and broadcasting ministry, and the platform quickly responded by agreeing to update the disclaimer.
Although the government has not issued a statement regarding the controversy, Netflix’s prompt action reflects its commitment to address concerns raised by viewers and authorities.
