Tragedy in the English Channel: Dozens of Migrants Drown

At least 12 individuals lost their lives after a small boat, carrying approximately 70 migrants, capsized in the English Channel near Boulogne-sur-Mer, France. French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin confirmed the tragic incident, stating that a search and rescue operation involving multiple rescue teams was underway.

Key Details

Local officials reported that several individuals were rescued but remained in critical condition, with the possibility of the death toll rising. The boat, attempting to cross from France to the UK, tore apart after being spotted in distress by a French vessel, resulting in the tragedy.

Mayor Olivier Barbarin described the situation as a “huge drama,” emphasizing its severity as the most deadly incident involving migrants in the English Channel this year. The town’s out-of-use hoverport was reactivated to assist in the rescue efforts.

Criticism Against French Authorities

Utopia 56, a migrant aid group, criticized French authorities for contributing to the crisis by implementing ineffective measures. The group highlighted the escalating number of deaths in the Channel, citing repressive policing as a factor in the tragic incidents.

The ongoing migrant crisis in the region has resulted in multiple fatalities, prompting calls for improved coordination and support for vulnerable migrants.
