Mexican demonstrators are standing strong against controversial judicial reforms proposed by President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and his Morena party. The reforms, which include the direct election of judges, have sparked outrage among judiciary workers who fear increased political influence and decreased professionalism.
Protests escalated on Tuesday as striking judiciary workers blocked access to the Supreme Court and Congress. Lopez Obrador argues that the reforms are necessary to combat corruption, but opponents like demonstrator Javier Reyes believe it could endanger democracy.
In a show of solidarity, the justices of the Supreme Court voted eight to three to join the strike, halting their work in support of the demonstrators. As tensions rise in Mexico City, the fight against the judicial reforms continues to intensify.
