Lebanon’s Former Central Bank Governor, Riad Salameh, Arrested After Interrogation
Former central bank governor of Lebanon, Riad Salameh, was arrested following questioning by the country’s judiciary officials at the judicial palace, as reported by Lebanese state media. This marked his first appearance before the judiciary since leaving his post in July last year.
Salameh, who served as governor for 30 years, faced numerous allegations of financial crimes including illicit enrichment. He is wanted in France for financial crimes, with Interpol issuing “red notices” against him. Despite denial of corruption charges, he was accused of contributing to Lebanon’s financial crisis.
During his three-hour interrogation, Salameh was questioned about various financial matters, including allegations of manipulating financial statements. Following the arrest, he was transferred to a more secure prison while remaining in custody for further interrogation.
Careholder Justice Minister Judge Henry Khoury and Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati both affirmed that the government will respect the judiciary’s decision and refrain from interference in the case.
