The recent attacks by Yemen’s Houthi group on oil tankers in the Red Sea have raised concerns about the environmental impact on maritime ecosystems, according to the US Central Command (CENTCOM).
CENTCOM confirmed that the Houthis targeted two crude oil-laden tankers, risking the lives of civilian mariners and posing a threat to global commerce. The attacked tankers, MV Blue Lagoon I and MV Amjad, were hit with ballistic missiles and an uncrewed aerial system.
The attack on MV Amjad, which is carrying approximately two million barrels of oil, has further intensified worries about the safety of the Southern Red Sea region. Efforts are ongoing to control the fire on MV Delta Sounion, which was previously attacked by the Houthis.
In response to these acts of terrorism, CENTCOM is collaborating with international partners to safeguard maritime commerce and protect the environment. The Red Sea, a crucial sea route for oil and fuel shipments, remains a focal point of concern.
The Houthis’ targeting of Israeli-linked cargo ships in solidarity with Gaza has prompted the US to launch Operation Prosperity Guardian to counter such attacks. The need for collective action to ensure maritime security and sustainability has never been more urgent.
