Recent regional elections in Germany have been a strong rebuke to Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s policies, according to Vyacheslav Volodin, the speaker of Russia’s State Duma. The results in Saxony and Thuringia have shown a clear rejection of Scholz’s Social Democrats (SPD), with the party coming in fourth and fifth, respectively, behind other political factions.
Volodin criticized Scholz for damaging the German economy with sanctions on Russian energy exports and involving the country in the conflict in Ukraine. He emphasized the dissatisfaction of German citizens with the current government and its handling of economic and migration issues.
In response to the election outcome, Scholz admitted disappointment but called for unity among democratic parties to form coalition governments without right-wing extremists. However, the challenge lies in finding a viable coalition partner, especially with the rise of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in Thuringia.
The election results reflect a shifting political landscape in Germany and highlight the growing influence of parties like the AfD and the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW). Wagenknecht’s party, which focuses on migration and foreign policy, emerged as a significant player in the elections.
