Former Prasa executive, Daniel Mthimkhulu, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for falsifying qualifications and documents. Found guilty of three counts of fraud, Mthimkhulu misrepresented his credentials and submitted a fake job offer to increase his salary. The Specialised Commercial Crime Court in Johannesburg imposed an effective 15-year term.
Proven to have lied about having a Master’s degree and a doctorate, Mthimkhulu inflated his salary at Prasa. The lack of qualifications put major projects at risk, like purchasing locomotives unsuitable for the rail network. The Hawks played a key role in his conviction, with the High Court ordering Mthimkhulu to repay R5.8 million to Prasa.
Despite the deception, Mthimkhulu’s actions highlight the importance of integrity in professional environments and the consequences of dishonesty.
