Former officials of the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) have taken their fight against the federal government to the High Court after being placed under administration. The former National President, Jade Ingham, criticized the government’s interference in the union’s affairs as “undemocratic” and “unconstitutional”. Ingham stated, “It’s our belief these laws are unconstitutional, undemocratic and they’re definitely unaustralian.”
“This is an extraordinary attack on not just CFMEU members, but on all trade unions and indeed our democracy,” Ingham added, highlighting the violation of union members’ due process rights by the forced administration. The government’s intervention followed allegations of corruption, intimidation, and criminal gang ties within the CFMEU’s construction division brought to light by investigative reports.
Despite the legal battle, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese defended the government’s actions, emphasizing the importance of eradicating corruption in the industry. The administrator will oversee the union during this turbulent period.
