Residents in parts of north Co Dublin and Meath are expressing concerns about the development of an accommodation center for international protection applicants at Thornton Hall. With a capacity of almost 1,000 residents, it will be the largest in the State. Local residents and politicians feel that the Department of Integration has not adequately engaged with the surrounding communities regarding the development, leading to misinformation.
Thornton Hall, a 150-acre former farmland acquired by the State almost 20 years ago, was intended for a super prison, but the development never materialized. Minister for Integration Roderic O’Gorman recently initiated the construction of an accommodation center on the site, which will house up to 1,000 applicants by January 2025.
Local communities near the site are raising concerns about the lack of amenities and infrastructure to support the residents. Councillors and community organizations are calling for more meaningful engagement and transparency from the Department of Integration to address these issues and ensure a successful integration process.
